AI Image Upscaling That Respects Your Privacy

Uplocal was built on a simple principle: your images belong to you. Most online upscaling tools require you to upload your files to remote servers, where they are processed, stored, and sometimes used without your knowledge. We took a fundamentally different approach. Uplocal processes every single pixel on your device. Your images never leave your browser. No server ever sees your files.

How It Works

Uplocal uses ESRGAN (Enhanced Super Resolution Generative Adversarial Network), an AI model specifically trained to increase image resolution while preserving detail and reducing artifacts. The model runs via TensorFlow.js directly in your browser, using your device's GPU through WebGL or WebGPU acceleration. When you drop an image, the AI model is loaded once and cached locally. Your image is then processed in tiles to manage memory efficiently. The upscaled result is assembled and made available for download, all without a single byte leaving your device.

Why Local Processing

Server based upscaling services transmit your images over the internet to remote data centers. This introduces privacy risks, latency, bandwidth costs, and dependency on third party availability. With Uplocal, the computation happens where the data already lives: on your machine. This means the tool works offline after the first model load, there are no upload queues, and your images remain 100% private. It also means zero server cost for processing, which allows us to offer a generous free tier.

The Technology

TensorFlow.js enables running trained neural networks at near native speed in modern browsers. Uplocal leverages WebGL and WebGPU backends for GPU accelerated inference. Images are processed in overlapping tiles (configurable patch size based on your plan) and reassembled seamlessly. The AI model weights are downloaded on first use and cached in your browser storage for instant subsequent loads. Output formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP with adjustable quality. Pro and Studio users benefit from larger processing tiles for faster inference.
